A big thank you to Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty for giving us the tonne of onions they gleaned on Channel 4’s Friday Night Feast. The pair teamed up with Gleaning Network UK – who are revitalising the ancient practise of collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields after harvest – to glean the veg and fight food waste in the fields.
Catherine from our FareShare London team went along and left with a tonne of surplus onions to take to a whopping 44 charities feeding people in need across the capital.
Since the cameras stopped rolling we’ve been busy getting them to charities like Kids Company, a place providing educational and emotional support to vulnerable children and Deptford Reach, a place supporting people affected by homelessness or social exclusion.
The gleaning expedition was the latest in a series of investigations into food waste by chef Jamie and farmer Jimmy as part of their Friday Night Feast.
FareShare’s Catherine tells Jimmy about our work redistributing surplus food to charities. Watch the episode on 4OD.
