Volunteering opportunities with FareShare
FareShare relies on the generous support of volunteers to help run and manage the project. Across the country, 280 volunteers work in our FareShare depots, carrying out a range of vital activities. For example, FareShare London has a regular team of 93 volunteers, many of whom have been working for FareShare for several years. FareShare provides valuable training opportunities in food hygiene, driving and delivery.
How do I volunteer?
FareShare currently operates depots around the country. Find your local scheme and contact them to enquire about volunteer opportunities at each project.
What do FareShare volunteers do?
- Drivers collect and deliver donated food to projects for homeless people. They carry out very basic checks on the FareShare van. They also help to plan routes and deliveries
- Navigators compile schedules for the shift and direct drivers safely to delivery and collection points. They are also responsible for ensuring that paperwork is completed at each stop
- Sorters ensure that food is of an acceptable quality for redistribution. The food is also counted and categorized
- Office volunteers assist with the administrative tasks in the FareShare office. These include answering telephones and dealing with general enquiries, data entry for collections and deliveries and organising mail outs.
What does FareShare offer me, as a volunteer?
- The chance to give practical help to improve the diet of homeless people
- Full training
- Reimbursement of reasonable expenses

- Drivers all need to have a clean driving licence
- All drivers will need a MiDAS (Mini-bus Driver’s Awareness Scheme) on-road assessment

- You will need to be able to commit yourself to at least one shift per fortnight
- Commitment to equal opportunities, adherence to the corporate policies ofFareShare and recognition of the need for confidentiality are all essential
